Jason Momoa Gives a Confident Answer on Aquaman's Future in the New DCU

The first part of DC’s slate for the revamped universe might have been out for a while now, but no one knows what’s actually in store for this cinematic world—not even the actors who help bring the beloved comic characters to life. Jason Momoa’s Aquaman was a grand slam for the DC Universe, and now with his upcoming sequel soon to be released, fans are wondering if they can still expect to see his hero lingering in the oceanic world, even though the management has been quite hazy for a while with James Gunn and Peter Safran on board.

The rumors of Momoa tackling a new hero via Lobo for the new DC Universe have been previously debunked, but now fans are still questioning if the upcoming sequel is the actor's last run in the role of Arthur Curry. Momoa provided a hopeful answer for the character while talking with Total Film, despite not confirming if he’s here to play the Protector of the Deep for good or if someone would succeed him after the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in the theaters.

“Peter [Safran]’s my producer [on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom], and is a dear friend. I absolutely think Aquaman will be involved in the DCU. It’s on, bro – there’s no one bigger than Aquaman! But, also, I hope people are excited to see the new one. It’s fun. I really enjoy doing comedy. There’s some really funny stuff with Patrick Wilson. I really adore him. We had a great time working together. It’s like we’re brothers. There’s a lot of cool stuff happening in this one.” explained Momoa.

Aquaman 2 underwent multiple delays, and despite being many months away, it had a lot of expectations to live up to and a lot of praise to win over given that Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods is giving DC Studios some sort of humiliation with all the negative feedback and incompetent box office numbers. But this might be hard to achieve with the sequel experiencing issues before it even comes out. One of which is Amber Heard’s impending case with Johnny Depp, with many prompting to have the actress removed from the film. DCU diehards attest that if she's in the movie, they will be left with no choice but to boycott it.

Additionally, Warner Bros. and DC Studios' early test screenings of Lost Kingdom are said to have been subpar. In February 2023, several reports stated that a half-dozen test screenings for The Lost Kingdom had been held, with each screening receiving unwelcoming feedback from the audience, which put the sequel in a very bad place. However, until its official release date, fans can still hope that there will be some plot twists in the reception of this second installment.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom arrives in cinemas on December 25, 2023.
