Yuri on Ice might not be getting a new anime soon, but the show is trending once again due to a new performance. Specifically, popular Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu went viral as he performed a skating routine using the song History Maker from Yuri on Ice.
The anime is arguably the most popular figure skating series from Japan, so it’s a perfect match that Japan’s most renowned ice skater performed the song’s opening on the skating rink.
This performance was also a huge hit not just for the impressive performance, but also because Hanyu even had singer Dean Fujioka as a guest.
Yuzuru Hanyu: Japan’s Most Popular Figure Skater
There’s no doubt that Yuzuru Hanyu is Japan’s most popular and most renowned figure skater.
But aside from being a huge name in his home country, Hanyu is also considered one of the best figure skaters of all time worldwide.
This is because Hanyu is one of the most decorated figure skaters. Not only is he a two-time Olympic champion, but he is also a two-time World champion and a four-time Grand Prix winner.
In fact, Hanyu is one of two single skaters to win seven world championship medals since the 1940s.
Last year though, Hanyu announced that he is retiring from the competitive figure skating scene after an illustrious 12-year career.
But that doesn’t mean he will stop performing as he will instead be a professional figure skater.
Hanyu continues to be an incredibly popular skater, and now, his fame is skyrocketing once again after an inspired Yuri on Ice performance at the Fantasy on Ice event.

Yuzuru Hanyu Skates to Yuri on Ice Theme ‘History Maker’
Fantasy on Ice is an annual touring ice show in Japan, and its last show for 2023 was held recently. This last show featured an epic performance of the Yuri on Ice theme, and it featured various well-known skaters.
It’s fair to say that Yuzuru Hanyu got the most attention as he was trending on Twitter following the performance. This is because many fans believe he and MAPPA's figure skating anime original are a perfect match.
To celebrate the performance, a fan even made a side-by-side edit of the anime’s OP with Hanyu’s performance.
Aside from Hanyu, the performance also featured popular figure skater Johnny Weir, as well as Dean Fujioka, who performed History Maker live.
As proven by this performance, Yuri on Ice continues to be a popular series.
And while an anime movie was announced before, it has been a while since MAPPA announced an update for it.
