James Gunn’s Suicide Squad NOT a Sequel?

James Gunn just recently made headlines when it was reported that he was in talks to direct and write the sequel to Suicide Squad, but rumors are now coming out that the film won't be a sequel at all.

This post comes from The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit:

At some point, I would understand a completely new roster, but I think it would be a waste not to have characters like Harley Quinn and Deadshot return. Heck, I want Captain Boomerang to have his time to shine since he was annoyingly useless in the original film—I loved Jai Courtney as the character though, and I wanted to see just how crazy he could be.

Judging on what Gunn has brought to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, I would like to see what he could bring to an ensemble film like Suicide Squad. The characters are admittedly interesting already in face value, but the movie ended up a tad shallow with a terribly predictable plot. Hopefully, Gunn can bring a bit more character and emotional stakes when it comes to the "Worst. Heroes. Ever."

Originally, Gavin O' Connor (Warrior) was set to direct Suicide Squad 2, but he left after frustrations that the greenlit Birds of Prey had a plot that was almost identical to his film. He has then moved on to direct the movie Has Been, leaving the director's chair empty for Gunn and the need for an entirely new script.

After all the drama with Gunn's firing from Guardians Vol. 3, I just want to see him win something. Let's hope Suicide Squad 2 delivers.

No release date has been announced for Suicide Squad 2.
