James Gunn Appears to Have Leaked the Direction of Superman in DCU's New Era

Following DC Studios’ co-head James Gunn's announcement that his casting for his Superman is currently out of the way, one thing that remains certain is that he continues to work on the script of his most anticipated project in DCU’s new era, which is the Man of Steel reboot. He needed some sort of inspiration to finish his writing mission, and DC's big boss might have revealed something that indicates where his Superman will go.

Gunn recently shared a picture of an open copy of Grant Morrison's seminal Superman story with the caption, “The secret to happiness is starting the morning with coffee and comic books.” A fan replied, “Not sure whether I'm relieved Gunn is a fan of All Star Superman or worried he's only just started reading it.”

The co-CEO quickly responded to the fan inquiry: “I've read it many, many times.” Despite not disclosing any further details about whether Morrison's work will influence his Superman, fans began to speculate that it could be the inspiration for his revival when another fan directed him towards the scribe's Action Comics run, which Gunn admitted he was already very familiar with, noting: “Oh, I love that.”

Many people consider the 12-issue comic book series All-Star Superman as one of the most iconic Superman plots. Written by Grant Morrison with art by Frank Quitely, the comic series ran from 2005 to 2008 and followed Superman after he learned that he was dying from excessive sun exposure.

The comic story sees Superman complete the herculean "Twelve Labors of Superman," prior to his impending fate. At the conclusion of the story, it is revealed that Superman, who has evolved into a solar entity, is still alive and maintaining the sun's internal machinery.

With Gunn expressing his fondness for Morrison's Superman writing, it makes sense that his upcoming take on Last Son of Krypton may heavily draw inspiration from Morrison's Action Comics. This run, which was a part of The New 52 relaunch, started from scratch and disregarded previous continuity in order to present a much younger version of Superman, which is exactly what Gunn's reboot is doing.

However, given that All-Star Superman follows the Man of Steel's last days on Earth, it’s unusual for Gunn to opt for a direct adaptation of Morrison and Quitely's story, as it would shy away from his provocative attempt to portray the early days of Superman.

In 2011, Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment released a direct-to-video animated adaptation of All-Star Superman and it’s currently available to watch on HBO Max.
