Due to the coronavirus pandemic, upcoming movies slated for release in the following months have gotten delayed. This also resulted in recent titles making their debut straight to digital or streaming services instead of a theatrical release like Trolls World Tour and Artemis Fowl. However, is there a chance that James Gunn's The Suicide Squad could be given the same treatment as well?
The director is often answering questions on Instagram from fans about the movies he's working on. This time, Gunn was asked whether he'd consider releasing The Suicide Squad or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 straight to VOD if he had the choice. He is actually open about the possibility but under one condition, "Only if that was the only way they could be seen."
Gunn's response is totally reasonable, given that most directors would want their films to be released in theaters first after all. The Suicide Squad wrapped filming earlier this year and he has been working on post-production for the movie remotely. It seems like the film is still on track for its 2021 release date, hopefully, movie theaters are operating as usual by that time. On the other hand, his third Guardians film is yet to have a release date, so it's too early to say if he'd consider wanting that to be released on VOD.
Should The Suicide Squad be affected by the pandemic or by another unforeseen matter, at least fans know that Gunn is open to the possibility.
The Suicide Squad is set for release on August 6, 2021.
