The Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise has been one of the most successful film series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but director James Gunn wasn't even sure that his movie starring a group obscure comic book movies would be a success.
On Twitter, Gunn was asked how confident he was when he was pitching The Guardians of the Galaxy that the movie would be a success. Though we know that the film works now, there was a time when everyone wondered about the success of a film with a talking raccoon and a walking tree.
Responding to the query, the director gave a surprising but honest answer to his followers, saying that he was confident about his movie even though he wasn't entirely sure that it would be a success.
"I was confident I could make a good movie & that I was uniquely suited for the project," Gunn wrote. "I wasn't sure it was going to be a success, but my gut told me it had the kind of color, fun, emotion, and characters people were hungering for in their tentpole movies."
It was good that Gunn listened to his gut because the filmmaker was right. The Guardians were exactly what Marvel needed back in 2014. Now, the ragtag team of cosmic thugs-turned-heroes is a Marvel staple. We can't get enough of Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Groot (Vin Diesel), and Mantis (Pom Klementieff)– although the list of Guardians members has to be updated now that Avengers: Endgame is over.
Phase 4 of the MCU begins when Black Widow premieres on May 1, 2020.
