2023 is already proving to be a pretty solid year for James Gunn not to mention pivotal. His final Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a sure-fire hit and there's a good chance it could actually cross the 1 billion mark by the end of its theatrical run next month.
Now that he's basically relieved of his duties in the MCU, Gunn has slowly shifted his focus to building the new DC Universe alongside DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran.
James Gunn Shocking Picks The Flash Over Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
On Twitter, Gunn responded to a fan who asked him what his favorite 2023 movie is so far. Naturally, considering Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 only came out this month and folks have still been raving about it nonstop, you would think that he'll pick the latest MCU blockbuster as his favorite.
Shockingly enough, Gunn's favorite 2023 film is actually the Andy Muschietti-directed film starring the ever-so-controversial Ezra Miller. For months, Gunn has been hyping up The Flash, even calling it one of the best superhero flicks he's ever seen which definitely says a lot.
In a subsequent tweet, Gunn was put on the spot by another fan who made him choose between The Flash and GOTG 3. While he didn't exactly give a definitive answer, he explained that he doesn't like critiquing his own work.
He wrote: "I can’t judge my own film, it’s like my child. It’s a different kind of love." Well, fair enough.

Reactions to The Flash have been generally outstanding but a lot of fans, mostly the ones who have been trying to boycott the project find it quite suspicious.
And lest we forget that Gunn pretty much said the same thing about Shazam! Fury of the Gods and although fans and critics found it serviceable, it still ended up disappointing at the global box office.
Personally, I have high hopes for The Flash because the concept alone is actually riveting. We'll see how it fares though.
DC's The Flash is slated for release on June 16. Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is still showing in theaters worldwide.
