James Gunn Isn’t Interested in Directing an Avengers Movie

Marvel fans might be hoping to see James Gunn try his hand at an Avengers movie after seeing the success of the Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise, but it seems like the filmmaker isn't interested in a large Marvel team-up movie.

Posting on his Instagram stories (via Screen Rant), Gunn decided to respond to a fan asking whether or not he would direct an Avengers movie after working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. As much as fans would want to see Gunn take on other Marvel titles, the filmmaker doesn't seem too keen on the idea.

"I haven't been asked, but I wouldn't do it if I was," the director wrote in response in his Instagram story.

It might come as a surprise to fans to hear that Gunn isn't interested in working on an Avengers movie. After all, the director has assisted Joe and Anthony Russo in their two-part Avengers movie. Gunn was part of the Russo Brothers' decision to kill Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War and he also helped write the dialogue for the Guardians in the film.

Perhaps Gunn has other projects planned for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Well, other projects outside of the Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise, that is.

Of course, fans ought to remember that Gunn has had quite a complicated relationship with Marvel. The director was once fired by Disney when an alt-right extremist dug up offensive tweets made years in Gunn's past. That smudge in Gunn's relationship with Marvel may be one of the reasons why the director has no interest in taking on an Avengers movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has yet to receive a release date, but we'll update fans as soon as we get word.
