James Gunn Confirms There’s No Rule Against Marvel And DC Actors Joining Competition

DC and Marvel stars might be free to join both franchises, but there's always been the assumption that DC's major stars can only work for DC, and Marvel stars can only work for Marvel.

Now, it looks like James Gunn has debunked that assumption, confirming that both comic book movie houses can share actors if they wanted to. The Guardians of the Galaxy director just recently took to Instagram to post an image of Michael Rooker (Yondu) and Pom Klementieff (Mantis) hanging out together outside of the set of The Suicide Squad.

There, the director decided to entertain questions from fans about his upcoming DC Extended Universe movie, The Suicide Squad. Fans were arguing over the question of whether there are rules in place preventing actors from working for a comic book film studio's rival, and Gunn decided to join the fray.

"Disney does not have that rule. That's how Sean Gunn, Dave Dastmalchian, and Taika Waititi are all in the film," Gunn replied.

Gunn's response shouldn't come as much of a surprise. There have been quite a number of actors jumping between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe before. Ryan Reynolds was DC's Green Lantern before he became Marvel's Deadpool. Ben Affleck had been Daredevil before becoming the Dark Knight in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Tommy Lee Jones played Harvey Dent in Batman Forever before joining the MCU as Colonel Chester Phillip in Marvel's Captain America.

Now, Gunn is taking a few major Marvel stars with him in The Suicide Squad and that includes Rooker, Sean Gunn, Dave Dastmalchian, and Taika Waititi. We wonder though whether Marvel or DC would allow major stars like Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Scarlett Johansson, Brie Larson, Chris Hemsworth, and the others from taking part in the projects of its competition.

The Suicide Squad premieres August 6, 2021.
