As the DCEU is about to end very soon with the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom this December, the new DCU under James Gunn and Peter Safran will begin the following year which marks a new era of the comic book movie franchise.
However, given that some of the elements from the DCEU are expected to carry over into the reboot, there has been some confusion from fans about whether the past projects will be integrated into the DCU canon after all.
Given the perceived failure of the current iteration, there were assumptions when the reboot was announced that Gunn and Safran would start from scratch again and recast all the roles.
Now, we finally have clarification over the canon of the DCU from the co-chairman of DC Studios himself.

James Gunn Addresses the Canon of the DCU
In his recent post on Threads, Gunn addressed the confusion over the DCU canon where he confirmed that Creature Commandos will be the first project that is part of the official DCU canon, and none of the DCEU projects beforehand is part of it.
"Nothing is canon until Creature Commandos next year - a sort of aperitif to the DCU - & then a deeper dive into the universe with Superman: Legacy after that," he wrote in his post.
"It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think it's okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet."
Gunn also added that some of the actors from the non-DCU projects will be reprising their roles in the reboot, but it doesn't necessarily mean that their past projects are part of the official canon.
He said, "And, yes, some actors will be playing characters they’ve played in other stories & some plot points might be consistent with plot points from the dozens of films, shows & animated projects that have come from DC in the past. But nothing is canon until CC and Legacy."
In other words, none of the DC projects that we are seeing at the moment is part of the DCU canon and the current iteration won't have any bearing even if some of the actors will eventually continue in the reboot.
This should give some clarification for fans who are confused about the DCU canon since Gunn has made it simpler by stating that it officially starts with Creature Commandos next year.
What we're going to see in the Aquaman sequel this holiday season won't be part of the DCU regardless of the events that will happen in the end or the teases that they might do regarding its future.
The first DCU film Superman: Legacy is slated to release in theaters on July 11, 2025.
