It's been a pretty depressing week, with the Coronavirus epidemic ensuring that people won't be going out of their house and enjoying themselves. Fans were sad when Hollywood's favorite uncle Tom Hanks was infected by COVID-19 but it got worse as Thor actor and future James Bond Idris Elba confirmed that he had it as well. Naturally, this resulted in a number of his friends asking for support, including The Suicide Squad director James Gunn.
On Twitter, Gunn admitted that "thoughts and prayers" tend to be looked down on since it's a response a lot of people use every time mass shootings make headlines. Bojack Horseman even made an entire episode that mocked how insincere the phrase was, which is why a lot of people tend to not phrase it that way. Still, that didn't stop Gunn from sincerely asking if fans could lend them some thoughts and prayers for Idris Elba.
This isn't the first time Gunn defended the phrase since he also came to Chris Pratt's defense when the actor asked for them a few years ago. Pratt is openly Christian and it was quite rude for fans to get angry at him for genuinely asking for prayers but that's just how people react to that negative phrase, even if people are serious about them. It's sad stuff.
The fact of the matter is, unless you can cure Idris Elba right now, the only things we can offer him right now are thoughts and prayers, for better or worse. Do what you need, just don't be a dick.
The Suicide Squad comes out on August 6, 2021.
