Sam Raimi Reportedly Wanted to Join Marvel for Almost Five Years

Marvel fans might have been surprised to hear that Marvel Studios was tapping Sam Raimi to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but it looks like the Spider-Man trilogy director has actually been hoping to join Marvel Studios for about five years from now.

ComicBook.com has just revealed long Raimi's been hoping to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking note of the filmmaker's journey after helping modernize the comic book movie formula with his Spider-Man movies. Back in 2015, the filmmaker told The Week that he would be glad to direct a film for the MCU. Marvel managed to perfect the comic book movie standard, and the director felt like the studio no longer needed the skills that he used to create his Spider-Man trilogy.

"I think they're so complete now, Marvel. They probably don't need me anymore," said Raimi. "But if they needed me? I'd love to. It's great to be wanted."

Now, it looks like Marvel is hoping to bring Raimi back into the world of superheroes and supervillains, but this time, for Benedict Cumberbatch's Sorcerer Supreme. Doctor Strange director Scott Derickson had been set to direct the highly anticipated sequel, however, the filmmaker left the project last month because of "creative differences" with Marvel.

Though Marvel has yet to seal the deal with Raimi, there are rumors circulating online saying that Raimi may very well introduce his version of Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire)into the MCU by using the universe-hopping that fans expect to see in Doctor Strange 2.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to premiere on May 5, 2021.
