Is Mortal Kombat 11's New Character Based on Thanos?

Mortal Kombat 11 has just had a big reveal today, and though only old characters appeared in the gameplay trailers, we have one whole trailer dedicated to newcomer Geras. What's weird is, it looks like this guy was inspired by Thanos from the MCU.

He may not look like much at first, but you can see how much he resembles the Mad Titan once he starts moving during battle. His color scheme is gold and dark blue much like Thanos, and at some point, his skin also looks purple.

I also think it's funny that a lot of his moves make use of sand (or rather dust), and he also seems to have power over time. When he enters we also see him walking on floating rocks. When we saw Thanos in full in Guardians of the Galaxy, what was he sitting on? A floating rock.

Of course, it's possible that NetherRealm didn't have Thanos in mind when they made the character, but what are the odds, really? Avengers: Infinity War was the biggest movie of last year. Don't tell me the team just so happened to come up with another muscle-bound purple bald guy clad in gold and blue without thinking he was anything like Thanos.

It's a big day for NetherRealm with their major MK11 reveals, and I'm sure Geras isn't the only new character arriving. Stay tuned for more.

Mortal Kombat 11 comes out April 23 and will be available for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
