Is Gilbert Alive in Violet Evergarden?

In the movie, it was shown that Gilbert is indeed alive but refuses to go back to his old life as guilt has taken over him. He was too ashamed that he couldn’t even face her. Towards the end, after reading Violet’s letter, he decided to patch things up with her and Violet and Gilbert enjoy life together.

There has been a debate on whether it was better that Gilbert was alive or was the story better if he was dead. Some believe that if Gilbert passed away, Violet can continue her new life as a normal human. She no longer lived just by listening to the orders of other people, even if it was Gilbert’s instruction to continue her life.

With Gilbert gone, Violet got her own identity. She learned how to start her life on her own, to understand people, and to do something that she is good at, other than being a soldier.

On the other hand, Gilbert’s fate brought closure to Violet. Even if she was able to start a new life without him, she was haunted by her past and feelings for him. It will not take too long before these emotions consume her.

Their reunion brought her back to life. She was able to let go of her past fully, with all the questions in her head finally answered. His return gave her peace and assurance, which was something she couldn’t get from anybody but him.
