Inside Out Director Reveals Breakthrough & Playing Around with Emotions as Characters

Apart from personality, one thing that interests those who are interested in Psychology are emotions. Even the most Thinking person (as per the Myers-Briggs Test Indicator) will have a spectrum of emotions—and Inside Out isn't that far off in showing that sadness can be key sometimes in leading a fulfilling life.

Director Pete Docter has recently revealed to NPR the journey in creating Inside Out, and just what almost happened that would have changed the tone of the film completely.

We know by now that Inside Out focuses on the journey of Joy and Sadness, and the former understanding that the latter is not what brings their master, Riley, down. But this almost didn't happen, because Joy almost didn't get lost with Sadness.

He revealed that it was supposed to be Fear who got lost with Joy.

"We had done all this research showing the job of each individual emotion—fear keeps you safe, it deals with uncertainty; anger is about fairness, if it feels that you're getting ripped off or taken advantage of, that's when anger comes up; sadness deals with loss—and suddenly I had this new revelation. It felt like to me, that those are all true but the real deeper reason we have emotions is to connect us together and that felt big to me."

This revelation was so sudden, that instead of a full screening, Docter along with producer Jonas Rivera and co-director Ronnie del Carmen went to Pixar to showcase the idea instead. And the rest is history.

Docter had also realized the importance of sadness, something that any psychologist would say is a crucial aspect of a person. This is why the story's prospect of acknowledging sadness instead of repressing it holds a lot of truth.

The director described sadness as a community bonding, quoting expert Dacher Keltner. Being sad can connect a person with others, especially when those other people feel your pain.

Inside Out still remains to be one of the good Pixar stories that have a worthwhile moral. As someone who is interested in Psychology, I feel like the major focus on sadness as integral to the person makes her just as much a hero as the rest of the emotions.
