Most popular anime films today are part of major shonen franchises, but this upcoming movie is something different and exciting. Recently, it was revealed that In This Corner of the World director Sunao Katabuchi will give a first look at his next film this September.

Specifically, Katabuchi’s next work is another historical anime movie, and a pilot video for it will be revealed at an upcoming anime event in Kyoto.

This will be Katabuchi’s long-awaited return as he has not directed a new anime movie since 2016.

Katabuchi is a veteran of the anime industry as he has worked on a wide range of titles since the 80s.

He has worked as an assistant director in Hayao Miyazaki’s Kiki’s Delivery Service and as the director of 2006’s Black Lagoon.

Perhaps his most popular work though is the anime film In This Corner of the World, which he directed at studio MAPPA.

This movie is based on the manga of the same name, and it’s a historical drama that chronicles the life of Suzu and her family before and in the aftermath of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

MAPPA may be known for its major shonen hits, but this film is among the studio’s most acclaimed works critically. Many praised how the film handled the depiction of pre and post-war Japan.

Since the film’s release, Katabuchi has not directed a new anime film. Though he has been busy with other projects like the video game Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown where he served as the story writer.

Soon, Katabuchi is making a comeback in anime with his next film, The Mourning Children: Nagiko and the Girls Wearing Tsurubami Black.

Similar to his previous work, The Mourning Children will be another historical drama. But unlike In This Corner of the World, Katabuchi’s next film will not be animated by MAPPA.

Instead, it will be primarily made by his own Contrail. Though MAPPA’s president is helping produce the film.

A first look at the film will be revealed at the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair 2023 on September 16.

There, a pilot video will be shared which is expected to reveal some animated snippets.

Following the video’s screening, a panel will also be held to give more insight into the film.

Right now, there’s no word yet on a release date for The Mourning Children.
