As a prequel, the upcoming Ted series gives us a glimpse into the rocky middle of John Bennett and Ted's decades-long friendship. And maybe more importantly, we get to see how Ted became the iconic foul-mouthed companion fans of the movies know and love.
The prequel is set in 1993 and in a way, is a coming-of-age story with a hefty side-serving of nostalgia.
Ted is ordered to join John as he goes to school, and in the process, he manages to get John bullied by the bigger kids and into various kinds of trouble.

The official synopsis of the Ted series reads:
"In this comedic prequel event series to the Ted films, it's 1993, and Ted the bear’s moment of fame has passed. He’s now living back home in Framingham, Massachusetts with his best friend, 16-year-old John Bennett, along with John’s parents, Matty and Susan, and cousin Blaire. Ted may be a lousy influence on John, but at the end of the day, he’s a loyal pal who’s always willing to go out on a limb for friendship."
So now we know how old John Bennett is in Ted 2024: at 16, he is a teenager doing his best to get through high school with his loyal companion beside him (for better or worse).
Who Stars in the Ted Series?
Since the series is a prequel, most of the original cast are not reprising their roles. The only one making a comeback is Seth MacFarlane, who voices the iconic bear, Ted, like in the franchise's feature-length instalment.
MacFarlane became a household name by voicing several characters in the long-running FOX animated series Family Guy.
Meanwhile, Ted's main character, John Bennett, is played in the 2024 series by 26-year-old Max Burkholder, who is a full 10 years older than his role. The adult version of John Bennett is portrayed by Mark Wahlberg in the Ted movies.
Who Else Stars in the TV Series?
Aside from Ted, Burkholder has appeared in Parenthood, The Land Before Time, Family Guy, My Friends Tigger & Pooh, and many more.
Other notable cast members of the series include Alanna Ubach, who plays John's mom, Scott Grimes, who plays John's dad, and Giorgia Whigham, as John's cousin.
Fans might recognize Ubach and Grimes from the Ted movies, where they had different roles.
The Ted prequel series will be available to stream on Peacock starting January 11, 2024.
