House of the Dragon Episode 3 Changes Alicent Hightower's Bid for the Iron Throne

We're only in the third episode of House of the Dragon but we have already moved forward around five years since King Viserys I Targaryen named his daughter Rhaenyra as his heir. In Second of His Name, the King has already married Alicent Hightower and they have a son named Aegon II while the new Queen is heavily pregnant with another potential heir. Still, unlike the Alicent we read about in the books, the show's Alicent doesn't seem eager to make a move for the Iron Throne just yet.

One of the notable things about House of the Dragon Episode 3 is how it made a change in Alicent's story. But will the young Queen continue to be a meek figure as the new game of thrones is on?

In House of the Dragon Episode 3, it is confirmed that the king has been receiving several proposals asking for Rhaenyra's hand in marriage. One potential suitor is Jason Lannister, whose arrogance doesn't impress Viserys and the princess.

Interestingly, Otto Hightower has a suggestion that could keep the suitors at bay: Betroth Rhaenyra to her half-brother Aegon II. The drunk Viserys initially laughs at the idea then tells Otto to stop with the politicking.

It's interesting to note that Otto is the one who suggests this to Viserys. In the books, it was Alicent who wants Aegon II to be married to Rhaenyra but the king turned her down, believing that Alicent only made the suggestion to get her own blood on the throne.

For now, it looks like most of the Hightower scheming is still by Otto but there is a possibility that things will change in the next few episodes.

House of the Dragon Episode 3 is now on HBO. House of the Dragon Episode 4 is titled King of the Narrow Sea. The new episode will premiere on HBO on Sunday, September 11, 2022, at 9:00 PM EST.
