The epic conclusion to Christopher Nolan's groundbreaking The Dark Knight trilogy marked the end of an era in the world of DC films but it's no secret to a lot of fans that Warner Bros. once toyed with the idea of actually continuing the "Nolanverse" which isn't all that surprising considering the trilogy was a critical and box office success.

There was also a persistent rumor that has been going on for years now that Christian Bale was eyed to play Batman in the DC Extended Universe, a franchise that was established a year following The Dark Knight Rises' release with the help of Zack Snyder but it was never confirmed.

Now, the Man of Steel director and DCEU patriarch has revealed that Warner Bros. initially wanted for the DCEU to actually take place within Nolan's established Batman world. In an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Snyder said: "It was not 100 percent off the table. We did talk about it a little bit."

The Justice League filmmaker would later confirm that the events of Man of Steel would have taken place around the time John "Robin" Blake officially took over the Dark Knight mantle from Bruce Wayne. "It would have been Joseph. Which could have been cool." In the end, Snyder added that he totally understood why Nolan chose to keep his universe exclusive to just Batman. "I like that his thing doesn't get muddied by these other touches."

To say things would've turned out quite differently would be quite an understatement and personally speaking, I'm glad cooler heads prevailed in the end and the planned crossover didn't come to fruition. As much as I love Nolan's work on The Dark Knight trilogy, there's no way Cavill's Superman would have ceased to exist in the "realistic" superhero world he created and I'm pretty sure Zack wasn't down with the idea of compromising his own vision for the Man of Steel.

Meanwhile, Henry Cavill's DCEU future remains uncertain as WB announces plans to reboot the Superman franchise.
