Hellboy Reboot Won't Be Setting Up a Cinematic Universe

Now that Marvel Studios is making billions of dollars, movie companies everywhere have been trying too hard to launch their own cinematic universe. The only "successful" ones thus far are the DCEU, which only has two good movies and the current Godzilla-King Kong monsters universe. Fans will be happy to know that the Hellboy reboot won't be rushing to make a cinematic universe, or even a sequel, which is surprising.

In a surprisingly candid review with JoBlo, lead actor David Harbour revealed that they just want to make the best movie possible with Mike Mignola's character and comic book universe. He's aware of the bad reviews that The Mummy got, with many criticizing the studio for trying too hard to set up a new cinematic universe, which is probably why it bombed. So, to that end, they are making a standalone movie and people will, hopefully, like it.

"If we make money. I mean, if people come see the movie. No, I don't like to think like that.I mean, look, to me, one of the pitfalls that I think we all kind of agree on is this, I mean, it's one of the things that I read critically aboutTHE MUMMYthat they got upset about was this idea that you spend half the movie setting up a universe as opposed to just making the greatest movie you possibly can. And then, if people want to see more of it, sure, we can do more of them."
"But like, we're not going to dole out little snippets of what you're going to see later. We're just going to make one movie that's awesome, and then if people love that movie, then we'll make more of them. But there is no doling out of a universe. It's like, we're just trying to make the best Hellboy movie you've ever seen, and that's all we want to do. And if people love it and they want more of it, I think most of us would be happy to do it. But we're not spending time setting up a universe."

Honestly, this is really refreshing to hear. With movie studios trying too hard to make sequels, it's nice to see a comic book movie try and make a standalone film. Hopefully, it all works out and we get a product worthy of its source material.

Hellboy comes out on April 12.
