Hellboy Reboot Projected For Dismally Low Opening Weekend

It doesn't look like Hellboy's going to do so well at commercially when the film opens later this year. The early box office numbers for Neil Marsahll's upcoming Hellboy are already out, and the odds don't look to good for the movie.

Box Office Pro has the numbers for the film's opening, and according to the site, analysts say that the film is going to bring in $16 million with a small $34 million for its domestic total. That's really, really low. For comparison, Marvel Studio's Captain Marvel raked in $154 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend.

The dismal opening weekend numbers are also pretty low when compared to Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy movies. Adjust for inflation and the 2004 Hellboy with its $23 million opening actually made $86 million during its premiere. Hellboy II: The Golden Army from 2008 did much better, raking in $34 million. Adjusted for inflation, and the film would have made $95 million today.

This might seem especially disappointing for Hellboy fans. Some might even take it as a sign that the film won't actually be any good. However, Hellboy's poor opening weekend projections have nothing to do with the film's quality, or the film's story.

One of the major factors why there's such a low estimate for the Hellboy reboot is that the film is being released between Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, two major comic book movies. That puts a niche superhero film like Hellboy in a very difficult spot.

Of course, the numbers could change. Let's just hope that it does.

Hellboy premieres April 12.
