HBO's Watchmen Could Last for Only One Season

After the release of Joker, comic fans are now looking to the release of HBO's Watchmen later in the month. While a lot of people are happy to return to the world that Alan Moore built with the comics, it's possible that the show could only last for one season.

Talking during a panel at the New York Comic-Con (via The Hollywood Reporter), showrunner Damon Lindelof explains that they made the first season a closed story. He explains:

"We want to see how it's received by you guys… If the show comes out there and the conversation surrounding the show suggests you're hungry for more, we'll certainly take that into consideration. We want to deliver nine episodes that deliver a complete and total, amazing story."

If it's anything like the comic though, it's likely we're going to end with an ambiguous ending anyway. If you recall, the original story had Rorschach's journal finding its way to a news office. We don't really know what happens from that point, but it was open to interpretation for fans. If this show manages to last only one season, then I expect an ending in the same vein at least.

Even if they did shoot the show to end with one season, it's likely Lindelof and his team have more planned down the line. I guess it's a nice contingency to end a story in case they don't get a greenlight for Season 2.

For now, catch Watchmen on HBO when it comes out Oct. 20.
