HBO's First Watchmen Teaser Image is a Complete Mystery

After laying dormant on it for a while, HBO has finally released the first teaser image of their upcoming Watchmen show. This adaptation has been billed as a spiritual successor to the story fans know and love since it won't be a direct adaptation of the graphic novel from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. It seems like this teaser will incorporate that logic since what was shown is going to be confusing for everyone.

Rather than show us a Rorschach mask or a Night-Owl blimp, we only see a policeman with a yellow mask covering his face. The closest thing this image pays tribute to is the smiley button that was first seen at the scene of The Comedian's murder and might just be the most iconic part of Watchmen.

The image was first shown as a part of HBO's official Watchmen Instagram, two words I never imagined going together, which also asks "who watches the Watchmen?" and, to be honest, that part is pretty cliche. Yes, it's one of THE quotes from that graphic novel but we could have used something more original.

Showrunner Damon Lindelof has promised that this won't be a panel-to-panel remake of the story that Zack Snyder's film was, which means we're in for a very fresh story. How fans react to these new characters and scenarios is going to be very interesting since comic book readers often consider this to be the best form of art the medium has ever produced.

HBO's Watchmen will premiere sometime in 2019.
