HBO Max Developing Batman Animated Movie Set in Mexico

For the past 80 years, we've seen a lot of different takes on Batman whether it's in the comics, television, feature films, video games, novels, and many more. Even though the character has existed for many decades, we're still seeing a lot of fresher takes and ways to reinvigorate it for each generation. Now, another Batman film is coming to our screens and this time it won't be in Gotham City.

According to Variety, HBO Max Latin America is developing a new Batman animated film titled Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios (or Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires), a new take on the Caped Crusader set in Mexico. Juan Meza-León is directing the film while José C. García de Letona, Fernando De Fuentes, Aaron D. Berger, and Carina Schulze are serving as producers. Horacio Garcia Rojas will voice the main character.

The Spanish-language animated film will take place against the backdrop of Aztec Mexico and immerses viewers in the enigmatic culture of Mesoamerica. Production will take place entirely in Mexico and showcase its top culture and ancient culture.

The film's logline reads: "In the time of the Aztec Empire, Yohualli Coatl — a young Aztec boy — experiences tragedy when his father and village leader, Toltecatzin, is murdered by Spanish Conquistadors. Yohualli escapes to Tenochtitlan to warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka, of imminent danger. Using the temple of Tzinacan, the bat god, as a lair, Yohualli trains with his mentor and assistant, Acatzin, developing equipment and weaponry to confront the Spaniard invasion, protect Moctezuma’s temple, and avenge his father’s death."

Based on the information, the concept sounds very interesting as it gives us a unique take on the story of Batman, which we've known for decades. It will also introduce us to a culture that most of us are not familiar with and we'll get to see what they will do on the classic tale of the Caped Crusader with their culture. It is curious to see what the finished results will look like as it has the potential to be a hit amongst fans.
