Hawkeye Composer Addresses Finale's Controversial Post-Credits Scene

WARNING: This article contains spoilers about the post-credits scene of the final episode of Hawkeye.

The post-credits of Hawkeye might be the most unusual yet in the MCU as it featured the full performance of "Save the City" from the in-universe Broadway musical Rogers: The Musical. The sequence caused division as some fans were delighted by it while some were disappointed that it didn't show any tease about an upcoming MCU project.

In an interview with Inverse, Marc Shaiman, the composer and co-lyricist of "Save the City," addressed the feedback that they received from the post-credits scene in which he shared that he is very much aware of the backlash that it has gotten. "I dangerously read just about everything," he said. "And so often it can be like, ‘oh, I wish I hadn't read that,’ or just getting facts wrong. But it was really nice to see someone completely understand the balls you have in the air with the juggling act."

He also addressed the challenge that they had on making the song, "The hard part was writing a song that had to be something that Hawkeye or people who don't like musicals would roll their eyes at. It's been tough because we did our job well, and that means there are a lot of people who were like, what is this?"

He also said that he understood the backlash given that most fans are expecting that a post-credits scene is supposedly a tease about a future MCU project. "I understand that there are a lot of people who would've expected and wanted the post-credits scene to be some new kernel of what's gonna happen next in the MCU," he said. "I completely get it. But it has been tough to know that by doing our job well, we made something that not everyone likes. It’s been bittersweet almost, but to be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is crazy."

Whether you like the post-credits scene or not, I think we can all agree that the song itself was great given the context and it is fun to see the MCU poke fun at themselves through doing a song like "Save the City" and a Broadway musical based on one of the Avengers. It works both as a song in the universe and an actual song if Rogers: The Musical is a real-life Broadway musical. They also showed a "Happy Holidays from Marvel Studios" as a title card before they showed the performance which means that it was Marvel's holiday present for the fans which made it more fun.
