Hawkeye Actor Jeremy Renner Reveals He was Almost Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy

Jeremy Renner is beloved by the MCU as Clint Barton a.k.a. Hawkeye, but did you know that he was almost the Right Hand of Doom for Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy?

Talking to the Life is Short podcast (via Entertainment Weekly), Renner explains why he had to turn down the role. He says, "I was just reading the script and [thinking] like, ‘I don't get this…' I just couldn't connect to it… I said, ‘I can't find a way in [to this character], I don't know what I'd be doing,' so I had to say no."

It's so weird that Renner would be considered for the part, seeing as he's kind of established himself as the handsome action star. No doubt, if he landed Hellboy, he probably wouldn't be playing Hawkeye in an Avengers movie.

At best, Renner says that he doesn't regret saying no to the part. He explains:

"There's zero regrets, zero. Most of the time it's like, ‘Oh, I'm glad I didn't do it,' and it made sense to me. Not just Hellboy or whatever it was, and I'm not saying that it's a good or bad movie, it's not about that… I just wouldn't have fit there."

Ultimately we got Ron Perlman's Hellboy, and he played the part so good that I think a big chunk of why people didn't check out the latest film was because Perlman wasn't in it. I do like David Harbour as the new Hellboy though, and I'm personally bummed that the film didn't make as much money as it should have.

For now, you can catch Renner in Avengers: Endgame which is still in theaters.
