There are lots of popular magical girl shows out there, but this new reveal might just be the most exciting as a classic from the 70s is surprisingly returning. Toei Animation announced that the Hana no Ko Lunlun magical girl anime will get a remake.

This classic series’ return comes as a shock for many, especially considering that the franchise has been essentially dormant since 1980 when the anime film was released.

Aside from being an unexpected reveal, this upcoming remake will also be made in collaboration with a Chinese studio.

Hana no Ko Lunlun Makes a Surprise Return

Toei Animation is one of the longest-running anime studios in Japan, and it is best known for its mega-popular shounen titles like Dragon Ball and One Piece.

In the 60 years that Toei has been making anime, the studio has a wide range of shows that most modern viewers may no longer be familiar with. One of these is Hana no Ko Lunlun.

Called The Flower Child Lunlun in English, this anime aired between 1979 and 1980, and it follows Lunlun, a young French girl who is chosen to be the next Flower Girl.

In the series’ world, the Flower Girl is key in finding the Flower Star, an item that is needed so that the dying Flower Planet King’s heir can take the throne.

Even most of today’s magical girl fans may not know of this anime, but back in its day, Hana no Ko Lunlun was a huge hit in the West.

In fact, it was one of the first magical girl shows to be shown in the US, even before Sailor Moon.

Hana no Ko Lunlun Returns With a Collab Between Toei and Tencent

It has been decades since the series ended, but now, Toei Animation announced that a new Hana no Ko Lunlun anime will be made, and it will be a remake of the original series.

The announcement was made at the Tencent Video Animation Festival 2023, and it came with a new visual. However, there’s no trailer for it yet.

Most of the promotional materials were released on Chinese platforms. This is because this remake is made by Toei Animation and Tencent Video, making it a Chinese co-production.

This isn’t the first time that Toei Animation teamed up with a studio outside Japan. There’s also the upcoming series Le Collège Noir that’s made in partnership with French studio La Cachette.

Currently, there’s no word yet on a release date for the Hana no Ko Lunlun remake.
