Despite reports of underperforming superhero movies, Sony Pictures' latest movie is set to make its theatrical release on February 14. The big question though is, will we be seeing Gwen Stacy in Madame Web?
Who is Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Gwen?
For avid fans of Spider-Man, Gwen Stacy has always been considered his great love. So when various variants of her character came into the picture, one alternate-universe version also became a superhero that went by the name Spider-Gwen or Ghost-Spider.
The character made her debut in the second issue of Edge of Spider-Verse, which was part of the Spider-Verse comic book released in 2014. Her popularity led to the release of the ongoing series, Spider-Gwen.
In this alternate version, Gwen Stacy was bitten by a radioactive spider instead of Peter Parker. She then becomes Spider-Gwen and fights against Spider-Man's usual enemies.
With her immense popularity, fans are eager to see Gwen Stacy in the Madame Web movie.
Is Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Gwen in Madame Web?
Now that the release date of Madame Web is nearing, its trailer has been released. One thing that viewers have noted in the trailer (and other articles surrounding the film's release) is that Gwen Stacy, aka Spider-Gwen, is absent in the upcoming film.
From the trailer, we see that Madame Web will include the following characters from the franchise:
- Julia Cornwall aka Spider-Woman
- Mattie Franklin aka Spider-Woman
- Anya Corazon aka Spider-Girl
- Cassandra Webb aka Madame Web
Yes, you read that right, there are two Spider-Women in the film but no Spider-Gwen in sight.
There were earlier predictions that Sydney Sweeney would play Gwen Stacy in Madame Web.
But as it turned out, Sweeney was cast as Julia Cornwall.
Why is Spider-Gwen Not in Madame Web?
So why is Gwen Stacy not in Madame Web? We don't know for sure why Sony Pictures decided to leave out Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Gwen in this movie.
If anything, this is a missed opportunity for Sony since it's always a win to include characters that the fans love.
Including Gwen Stacy or even Jessica Drew, in Madame Web would have made sense. But at this point, we don't know Sony's reason for leaving out these two prime characters in the franchise.
This Marvel Fandom page shares that in Earth-517 universe, Gwen Stacy became Madame Web. But we don't know yet if Earth-517 is the same universe that the film follows.
We do know that Madame Web shares the same universe as the Venom and Morbius movies.
We'll have to wait for an explanation from Sony on why they left out this character from the movie.
