Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Director on Getting Sacked From Marvel: ‘I Truly Am Grateful’

It’s no secret that now-turned DC Studios boss James Gunn was sacked from his previous job working under Marvel Studios.

This was due to a couple of inappropriate tweets he made that resurfaced the internet, leading to his Marvel firing.

However, in spite of that, this is when he was given the opportunity to lead DC Studios alongside co-CEO Peter Safran.

While he was removed from his position in Marvel, this did not stop him from returning to helm his one last MCU project: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Now, Gunn has just revealed his candid reaction to his experience with Marvel, and how ‘grateful’ he was to have been fired in the first place.

“One one hand, it was a very painful period and there are moments when I recall it and say to myself, ‘God, why were you so stupid?’” Gunn admitted in a recent interview with OneMan.

Gunn then shared the positive side of the Marvel firing: “On the other hand, I am grateful for that period, because I think it came at a moment of my life when I really needed it.”

“I had forgotten the reason I make movies. What was important to me. I also didn’t know how much my people loved me. I used to be the person who worked hard, who could depend on his status and fame to receive love.” Gunn said.

Eventually, he emphasized how getting sacked was a ‘great life lesson’ for him, considering that once he lost his job, only then did he find his people within Marvel, namely the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

Gunn added: “They all supported me. They loved me for who I was [even without having a ‘certain power’]. They were there whatever happened. Whatever the end result would be. They didn’t support me because I make movies. It was a great life lesson for me and I truly am grateful.”

In the meantime, you can catch James Gunn’s last MCU project, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 still showing in theaters worldwide.
