Guardians of the Galaxy Star Tackles the Challenges of Playing Rocket Raccoon

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will have its worldwide premiere in a few days but critics have already seen it and have nothing but praise for it. The film might be the last time MCU’s favorite family will be seen together again.

Despite the conclusion to the Guardians story, the third movie will present them in a brand new light, especially Rocket Raccoon, who’s said to be the center of Vol. 3. Sean Gunn, who provides the motion capture for the character, reflected on the challenges that come with portraying Rocket.

“Fortunately, a lot of the toughest Rocket scenes were the very first things we shot so the stuff with Lylla and the other friends from Rocket’s past, we did the motion reference for that stuff right away. Those are the first things and so kind of got through the hardest stuff first because that stuff is really emotional,” he said to ComicBook.

The actor also weighed in on how he ended up tripling his Rocket obligations by lending his voice to the younger version of the character this time around, which is something he's not used to.

“There’s a sequence for when young Rocket is sort of asking about the sky to the High Evolutionary. That is actually my voice, which hadn’t been done in any of the previous movies. I mean, it’s just part of the gig like anything else. It’s like you and me going back and figuring out who this guy is and where he came from and oh, heart-wrenching but it’s good.” explained Gunn.

Other than Rocket, Gunn has doubled duty for the MCU as he also portrays Kraglin, and in the interview, he also discussed the lessons he has learned given his responsibilities.

“I think that that’s kind of part of the gig is that you have to take in what he’s taking in. And Kraglin has been on a hell of a ride. From being the sidekick in the first movie to the second movie, he has such an emotional journey, and all his friends are killed, essentially, and he’s adrift, just like the Guardians have been adrift. And in the third movie, he’s finding his place within the family, the Guardians family. And being able to sort of experience that firsthand, it’s such a cool part of my job and being able to relate to it.” he reasoned.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 opens in cinemas on May 5.
