A while ago, we learned that Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are working on a film adaptation of the popular racing video game Gran Turismo. During that time, the details regarding the plot of the game's big-screen iteration were under wraps. Now, we finally have the film's release date and its premise.

According to Deadline, Sony has set an August 11, 2023 release date for the Gran Turismo film adaptation. In addition, they have also announced its logline: "Based on a true story, the film is the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver."

District 9 director Neil Blomkamp is helming the film. Jason Hall wrote the screenplay. Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Doug Belgrad, and Dana Brunetti are serving as producers. The project is one of the many titles that PlayStation Productions is currently working on alongside the Ghost of Tsushima film adaptation, Twisted Metal TV series, and many more.

In case you're not familiar with the source material, Gran Turismo is a series of racing simulation video games that launched in 1997 and has since then sold over 85 million units worldwide making it the highest-selling video game franchise under the PlayStation brand. It is being hailed as one of the best racing video games thanks to its graphic, the number of licensed vehicles that you can play, attention to detail, and accurate physics.

It is great that they have now set a release date for the film next year as it indicates that production will begin very soon and we will hear more news and updates shortly regarding the casing, filming locations, and many more. The premise also sounds interesting as it seems that they found a way to tell a story related to the game considering that it doesn't have a plot that they can adapt.
