After directing One Piece Film: Red last year, Goro Taniguchi is back with his next film titled Bloody Escape, and it just got a January 2024 release date announcement.
This upcoming film is Taniguchi’s latest work, and unlike his previous movie, this is an original movie with a sci-fi premise.
Surprisingly though, this new film is part of an existing anime franchise that Taniguchi had a hand in creating. This might not be readily apparent given how much darker Bloody Escape seems to be.
Goro Taniguchi’s New Project Is Surprisingly Part of the Estab Life Series
Goro Taniguchi is a renowned figure in the anime industry as he has directed several popular titles over the past decades.
Perhaps his most popular work is Code Geass, an iconic anime series of the 2000s. Taniguchi not only directed the anime at Sunrise but he also came up with the show’s original story.
Aside from Code Geass, Taniguchi has also directed other popular titles like Planetes, Maria the Virgin Witch, and Gun x Sword. Most recently, Taniguchi directed One Piece Film: Red, the latest film in the long-running franchise.
It may not have gotten as much attention as Film: Red, but Taniguchi also supervised the 2022 sci-fi anime series Estab Life: Great Escape.
This anime is part of a mixed-media project that also includes an upcoming mobile game from Square Enix. Think of it as something like the Uma Musume: Pretty Derby series.
Taniguchi’s new Bloody Escape film may seem like its own thing, but it’s actually part of the Estab Life series. After all, the Great Escape characters appeared in the movie’s trailer.

Bloody Escape Anime Film Gets January 2024 Release Date
Bloody Escape was originally announced as Estab-Life: Revengers' Road. Soon, the film was promoted under a new English title.
Even if it dropped Estab Life in its title, the movie is still presumably part of the media franchise. After all, the film’s trailer features the Great Escape characters, specifically at the 24-second mark.
Given the appearance of these characters, it’s likely that the Great Escape cast will return for this film, though there’s no word yet on an official cast list.
What is confirmed is that the anime studio Polygon Pictures (Kaina of the Great Snow Sea) is animating this new movie.
Bloody Escape is confirmed to be released in Japan in January 2024. For now, there’s no announcement yet on English release plans for the film.
