How Glass' James McAvoy Went From Professor X to The Beast (Not THAT Beast)

M. Night Shyamalan's Glass has gotten a mixed response from critics and it's easy to see why. The film is a pretty big mess that is neither as smart or as subversive as it thinks it is, though it does have salvageable moments. Some of them come from James McAvoy, who acts his butt off and proves that he is an actor to watch, though some would say that he was better in Split.

Then again, Split was a better movie.

Anyway, fans were probably shocked at seeing the Professor X actor looking more like Juggernaut than a wheelchair-bound telekinetic. Speaking with USA Today, McAvoy revealed that he was told that his role would require he be shirtless most of the time so he knew that bulking up was required.

"I was like, ‘OK. I'm going to have my shirt off, aren't I?' And (Shyamalan) was like, ‘Yep.' I knew I had to get down in the gym and kind of back up his name. I had to give a little bit of aesthetic credibility to that fear that he's supposed to inspire in people."

Magnus Lygdback trained McAvoy to get into shape, making him work out five to six times a week and eat five meals a day all the way through Dark Phoenix filming. Lygdback also helped Gal Gadot and Alicia Vikander get in shape for Wonder Woman 1984 and Tomb Raider respectively.

As "The Beast," McAvoy had to look imposing enough to kill policemen and take on Bruce Willis, so the workout was definitely necessary. It's fair to say that McAvoy looks beast-like body-wise and that might help him get more roles. Fitness sells movie tickets after all.

Glass is now showing in theaters.
