Ghostbusters Getting An Animated Movie

After the disappointing flop that was 2016's Ghostbusters reboot, fans thought that they might not be able to see anymore Ghostbusters material for a while — well they thought wrong. Original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman has confirmed that there are several Ghostbusters projects in the works as of now, including more live-action films, a VR game, and an animated movie.

In an interview with io9, Reitman explained:

"We jumped into an animated film [after the last movie] and we are developing live-action films. I want to bring all these stories together as a universe that makes sense within itself. Part of my job right now is to do that."

Ghostbusters actually had its own animated series back in the 80s called The Real Ghostbusters, and it got a revamped series called Extreme Ghostbusters in the late 90s. With this animated movie in the mix, it's possible that we could either revisit the classic Bill Murray-era Ghostbusters or maybe something else entirely — Reitman didn't go into much detail.

As for last year's flop, Reitman has also expressed his disappointment in the film. He says, "We certainly would've loved to have a larger hit." Well, so did we. I had no issue with the cast being all female, but the movie was just poorly executed.

Reitman hopes that the animated film could get a release sometime around 2019 or 2020.
