Following the unexpected success of Afterlife in late 2021, the upcoming sequel Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is set to release early next year and the main cast from the previous film is returning for another supernatural adventure.

The follow-up installment is going to be set in New York City this time around, the same location where the original films also took place. Not only that, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson are also returning to join the new generation once again.

A lot of fans have been excited about the film, especially after the release of the first trailer which revealed the chilling problem that the main characters will face.

Empire Magazine recently released a new look image at Ghostbusters: Frozen Image featuring returning original cast member Bill Murray and Paul Rudd, who is also coming back to reprise his role from Afterlife.

In the image, you can see Murray's Peter Venkman and Rudd's Gary Grooberson having a conversation in the infamous Ghostbusters firehouse headquarters

Director Gil Kenan also explained why they took a new direction for the upcoming sequel in its return to New York City.

"Because the Spengler family story drove the narrative in Afterlife, bringing Gozer back to centre-stage was a natural way to close the book on the past," he told Empire in the interview.

"But we are now in the post-Gozerian era of the Ghostbusters saga, so that means we’re able to stretch out and create an entirely new mythology. And that’s thrilling as a storyteller, because there are all-new and terrifying stakes with fresh visual references to draw on."

It is an exciting tease about the film since it looks like they are going to explore the two different generations of Ghostbusters and they will have a crossover in the story unlike in the previous film where the original cast members appeared in a cameo near the end.

There's a lot of potential in the new mythology and concept that they will introduce in the upcoming sequel and, hopefully, it is going to deliver in a way that fans will be satisfied after watching it.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is slated for release in theaters on March 29, 2024.
