While it's been more than a year since HBO's Game of Thrones ended, fans are still looking to author George R.R. Martin for the release of Winds of Winter. What's funny is, Martin had imposed his own deadline last year, and he's getting dangerously close to it.

Martin had posted on his blog (via @thronesfacts) last year that if he doesn't have the final copy of Winds of Winter with him at the time of New Zealand's World-Con (which was set to take place on July 29, 2020), he has given permission for fans to ‘imprison' him. These are his exact words:

I tell you this — if I don't have THE WINDS OF WINTER in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for Worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I'm done.

Well, it's only 48 days left till we get to July 29, and by the looks of it, we haven't gotten any significant updates from Martin; meaning that he's probably not close to being done.

Of course, it's possible that Martin and his publisher could be waiting for some kind of big reveal down the line, and seeing as everyone is currently worried about the pandemic and #BlackLivesMatter, maybe they've decided to hold off and wait for things to get less heavy. In any case, Martin should have gotten some work done, what with all this time in quarantine.

While it's just my guess, I have a feeling an announcement would be made by the time of SDCC 2020 which will take place on July 22–26. Hopefully, by then Winds of Winter will finally have a release date.
