In The Apothecary Diaries, Jinshi is often seen accompanied by his special aide, Gao Shun. In Maomao’s eyes, Gao Shun looks like a competent but unfortunate man who always has to deal with Jinshi’s antics. Let's take a closer look at Gao Shun's strength to learn more about him!

In the first three episodes of The Apothecary Diaries, Maomao meets Gao Shun, Jinshi’s most trusted assistant.

He is often seen accompanying Jinshi wherever he goes, whether he’s in Lady Gyokuyou’s place or Lady Li Hua’s place.

Gao Shun also hangs out around Maomao due to Jinshi’s commands, just to ensure that the new poison taster will not use her newfound position to betray the Emperor and his beloved consort.

Jin Shi, if we can remember, is not just an eunuch but also an investigator to determine the harem’s loyalty to the emperor.

As Jinshi’s assistant, Gao Shun is knowledgeable about court policies. He deals with them a lot, to lessen Jinshi’s workload.

He has a lot of connections around the palace, which makes it easier for him to do his job, especially in the part where he has to relay important information to Jinshi.

Gao Shun may be an aide, but he also acts like a father figure to Jinshi most of the time. He doesn’t mind listening to Jinshi’s complaints, but he can’t take it whenever his master acts sluggish and spoiled at his age.

Before becoming Jinshi’s assistant, Gao Shun was the Emperor’s assistant. If this does not speak volumes about his strength and combat prowess, then I don’t know what it is.

Another indication of his strength is how Gao Shun is most likely named after the Warring States period military commander of the same name.

His strength earned him the moniker camp crusher/formation breaker, due to his destructive charges against his opponents.

He was also known as the ablest commander of Lu Bu, the warlord during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China.

Back to the anime, Jinshi still lacks combat feats, but this doesn’t mean that he’s not as strong as we think he is.

To become an emperor's assistant, one must meet stringent qualifications and be recommended by some of the most influential court figures.

On the other hand, Gaoshun has a son named Basen, who is incredibly strong and sturdy.

Not only did Basen defeat four armed men without a weapon on his own, but he also survived being run over by a horse, as if he had been used to it all this time.

The saying the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, in this case, applies to Basen and Gaoshun.

While Gao Shun is known for being a highly capable man, he also has a strange nickname around the palace.

He earned the nickname “hen-pecked husband" because he is easily bossed around by his scary and overbearing wife.

This affected Gao Shun’s behavior toward women. He has a fear of women, as does Basen, although he is fine with Maomao.

He only shows this side of him whenever a woman commands him to do something, even if it is peasant work.

All in all, the strength of Gao Shun in The Apothecary Diaries doesn't only rely on his combat prowess. He is an intelligent man capable of making sound judgments, which Jinshi often trusts and follows.

He is an intellectual who knows how to make his way around the politics of the imperial court.
