HBO's award-winning epic fantasy Game of Thrones returned to the Emmys stage on Monday, winning the Best Drama Series award.

The series, which was ineligible for last year's Emmys, won the coveted award, and star Peter Dinklage won Best Supporting Actor for his role as Tyrion Lannister.

HBO's epic won nine Emmys this year, bringing its total to 47 awards overall.

"Writing for these actors behind us is the honor of a lifetime," said series co-creator David Benioff.

"But we didn't invent these characters. That was George R.R. Martin. The show could not be without the mad genius of George."

Westworld star Thandie Newton won Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her role on HBO's futuristic sci-fi.

"I don't even believe in God but I'm going to thank her tonight," Newton said.

Game of Thrones will return for its eighth and final season next year.
