Game Of Thrones: Who Was Varys Sending Letters To About Jon Snow?

People are still having trouble dealing with what happened in the fifth episode of Game of Thrones Season 8. After all, Daenerys Targaryen's attack on King's Landing was truly a shocking event that has already launched a petition to remake the entire final season. However, the episode also opened with a quiet mystery of its own: Who was Varys trying to send letters to and why do these people need to know that Jon Snow is the true heir to the Iron Throne?

In The Bells, Varys was first shown writing a letter that clearly stated Jon's real name and that he is the true heir to the Iron Throne. He was interrupted by a little kitchen maid named Martha, who informed him that Daenerys is refusing to eat. It's a quick exchange that may have confirmed the Master of Whispers is trying to poison the Mother of Dragons and prevent her from attacking King's Landing. Unfortunately, Varys was arrested and immediately "dracarys-ed" into ashes before we could find out who he was writing to.

So who are the people that deserve to know about Jon being the rightful heir? Winter Is Coming speculates that Varys may have been sending letters to the new prince of Dorne as well as Yara Greyjoy in the Iron Islands. He might also be trying to reach out to other great Houses around Westeros although it's unclear if they still exist.

But is it possible that Varys might be sending the information to a truly unexpected person? One theory suggests that the Spider wanted Cersei Lannister to know that Jon is the true heir. It's a strange decision but perhaps the Spider believed it could make Cersei consider Daenerys less of a threat. Unfortunately, we'll never get to know how that information would have changed things for King's Landing.

Do you think Varys was writing letters for the whole of Westeros? Let us know in the comments below.
