Game of Thrones fans have been waiting for the sixth novel of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire saga, The Winds of Winter, and it looks like the highly-anticipated epic fantasy book will be released soon. The fifth novel, A Dance with Dragons, was published about 10 years ago, and the HBO series Game of Thrones concluded in 2019, so fans have been wondering if Martin is almost done writing The Winds of Winter.

Martin recently shared an update on The Winds of Winter, revealing that he's written "hundreds and hundreds" of pages last year.

In his Not a Blog entry, Martin explained that even though he still has "hundreds of more pages to write to bring the novel to a satisfactory conclusion".

However, he says that 2020 was "the best year I've had on WOW since I began it".

Martin hopes to complete this "satisfactory conclusion" this year, but didn't provide a specific date on when he will finish The Winds of Winter.

"Every time I do, assholes on the internet take that as a 'promise,' and then wait eagerly to crucify me when I miss the deadline. All I will say is that I am hopeful." Martin said. If you're wondering why it's taking so long for Martin to finish The Winds of Winter, read the reasons here.

The 72-year-old American author also talked about Trump, "a zillion other things to do", and the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on him and his loved ones.

Last year, Martin said that he was hoping that "both COVID-19 and The Winds of Winter will be done" in 2021.

Personally, I don't feel as excited to read The Winds of Winter as I used to prior to the conclusion of HBO's adaptation of Martin's epic fantasy book series since the remaining novels will most likely feature the same major plots we've already seen in the show. However, there are still story elements in the books never shown in the book like the Lady Stoneheart storyline. Although readers will probably see the same major events featured in the show, The Winds of Winter will most likely show interesting details and storylines not featured in the HBO series.
