It’s not clear yet what Hayao Miyazaki’s next anime film will be, though one of his earliest works is getting a new project. Recently, it was revealed that Miyazaki’s Future Boy Conan anime is getting a stage play adaptation.

The upcoming play was revealed earlier today, with info on its staff, venue, and dates being confirmed. There’s no cast info yet, but the production staff should make it a promising watch for fans in Japan.

Miyazaki’s films may be popular all over the world, but it’s fair to say that his Future Boy Conan anime isn’t particularly well-known except for the most dedicated of fans.

Hayao Miyazaki is a legendary anime director who has created lots of iconic works such as Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Spirited Away. This year, Miyazaki made a comeback with The Boy and the Heron.

Before he founded Studio Ghibli, Miyazaki worked as an animator in a wide array of shows, including Lupin III. Thus, his feature film debut was the Lupin III movie titled The Castle of Cagliostro.

This isn’t Miyazaki’s actual directorial debut though. Not counting the Yuki’s Sun pilot, the Future Boy Conan anime series was the first proper project that Miyazaki directed.

The anime was made by Nippon Animation, and it’s a post-apocalyptic steampunk series based on The Incredible Tide by Alexander Key.

The series wasn’t a big hit when it aired in 1978, though since then, the series has become quite popular. Interest in it was renewed a few years ago thanks to Masaaki Yuasa’s Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! anime.

Back in 2021, the series got a Blu-ray release in the US via GKIDS. This time, fans in Japan will be treated to the Future Boy Conan stage play adaptation.

At the helm of this production are Inbal Pinto and David Manboeuf, with a script written by Yasuo Ito and music by Kaitaro Abe.

This stage play will be performed at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre Playhouse in Tokyo in May and June 2024.

Ticket details along with cast information are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks or months. What is confirmed is that there are plans for a tour performance of the play.

Based on other anime stage plays, this tour will likely be in Japan only. Fingers are crossed though that a theatrical release of it will be made, just like with the Spirited Away stage play.
