There is little doubt that Frozen made Queen Elsa of Arendelle an icy icon. After all, her platinum blond hair and ice blue gown were immediately copied by little girls around the world. However, some early concept art from the Disney film reveals that Elsa was not supposed to be blond at first. In fact, she was supposed to be the villain in the movie.
The Frozenconcept art is just one of several different looks that were revealed but the original Elsa is certainly striking. Interestingly, the character was initially envisioned to have spiky black hair and an ever-present frown. Check it out at the 1:12 marker below.
Although it might seem shocking that Elsa was supposed to be a brunette AND a villain, the idea doesn't stray far from the story that inspired Frozen in the first place. The film is based on Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen where the queen with icy powers is the antagonist. Interestingly, Elsa was supposed to take on the Snow Queen's role while Anna may have been the young girl named Gerda in the fairy tale.
Luckily, Disney decided to give the story a fresh spin and portray Elsa as a conflicted character who finally embraces her powers with the song Let It Go. As a result, the 2013 movie is one of the House of Mouse's biggest hits. In addition to that, the sequel is expected to be a major box office hit as well.
Frozen 2 is scheduled for release on November 22.
