While the show is set to premiere on TV and on streaming platforms at the end of the month, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End recently announced cinema screening dates and venues in Japan one week before the official release.

Unlike other anime special screenings which are only done in Tokyo, the Frieren screening will happen in six venues across five cities all over Japan.

As for the screening itself, only the first episode will be shown, though that’s no issue given that the premiere episode is basically movie-length.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is an upcoming anime by Madhouse that’s based on the manga of the same name which has a sizeable following.

What makes the series unique among other fantasy titles is that it is set 50 years after a group of adventurers have defeated the demon lord. Typically, shows follow the group while on their quest.

This interesting premise already makes it an intriguing show to watch out for. But it will likely make an even bigger splash when it premieres, as the first episode will be a two-hour special.

Extra-long premiere episodes for anime have become a trend recently. While it’s not new, more and more shows have chosen to start with hour-long or even longer first episodes.

For instance, Oshi no Ko opened with an over-hour-long premiere episode, which made sense for the series given how the story is segmented.

The two-hour Frieren premiere makes it a perfect cinema screening, so it’s no surprise that it will get a special showing in Japan on September 23.

This won’t be a typical cinema screening run as it will only happen in one day. At least, fans all over Japan can see it as it will be held in these five venues:

  • TOHO Cinemas Roppongi Hills in Tokyo
  • TOHO Cinemas Ikebukuro in Tokyo
  • TOHO Cinemas Umeda in Osaka
  • TOHO Cinemas Tenjin in Fukuoka
  • Midland Square Cinema in Nagoya
  • Sapporo Cinema Frontier in Sapporo

While there are six venues, the Roppongi event will feature appearances from the show’s voice cast, including Atsumi Tanezaki (Anya in Spy x Family), Kana Ichinose (Suletta in Gundam: Witch from Mercury), and more.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End will premiere on Japanese TV on September 29, 2023. The series will then be released on Crunchyroll in the US and other selected regions.
