Former Japanese princess, Mako Komuro, has officials arrived in the U.S. with her husband to start a new life. The former member of the Japanese royal family gave up her life of luxury and ancient imperial tradition to live a relatively simpler life in New York.

The couple arrived in New York on Sunday. Footage of their arrival showed them flanked by security officials as they walked through New York’s John F. Kennedy airport and into a waiting vehicle. The two arrived in the country on board a commercial flight.

Love Conquers All

Mako Komuro’s husband, Kei Komuro, attended law school in New York, and he is now working as a paralegal in the city. He reportedly met Mako Komuro while they were both attending university in Tokyo more than a decade ago. The two have reportedly already secured a place to live in New York, but its location has not been made public.

Mako Komuro, formerly Princess Mako of Akishino, was stripped of her royalty status after she decided to marry her “commoner” boyfriend. The union was banned under postwar succession laws as only male members of the imperial family were allowed to replace the emperor.

Public Scrutiny

After they became engaged in 2017, Kei Komoru’s family was heavily scrutinized by the media. It was then uncovered that his family had run into some financial difficulties, an issue that was blown out of proportion by the press. The issue led to the imperial family and most of the general public disapproving of the union.

Mako Komuro did not take the media attention very well, and following the revelation of the scandal, the Imperial Household Agency revealed that the princess was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
