First Look at the Phoenix in International Poster for Mulan

It's no mystery that the live-action Mulan will be deviating a lot from the original animated film, and one big change is the scrapping of Mushu for what is said to be a phoenix. What's interesting is, a new international poster for the film seemingly gives us our first look at Mulan's animal sidekick—if you could even call it that.

Check it out:

We don't know what the phoenix's relevance to the plot is, but it's likely that it will have something to do with the powers that Mulan is rumored to receive in the film. Seeing as the phoenix is usually regarded as a majestic magical creature, I don't really expect it to get into some wacky hijinks as Mushu does in the original cartoon.

For now, the Mulan film has caught a whiff of trouble thanks to the main star Yifei Liu showing her support for the police during the Hong Kong protests. A lot of people have opted to #BoycottMulan online, despite the positive reaction to the first trailer.

Besides the criticism on Liu's part, the film is also said to be undergoing extensive reshoots. We don't know what these pick-ups are going to be for, but rumor has it that early test screenings have not been going well for the movie.

Personally, I have a lot of issues with the changes they're making with the film, but all of my reactions are just based on the rumors that have come out. I'll have to wait and see when the movie comes out on where Mulan stands on my personal opinion.

Catch Mulan when it hits theaters March 27, 2020.
