Firestarter Reboot Snags Award-Winning In The Fade Director Fatih Akin

There's certainly been a spike in the development of Stephen King adaptations ever since the success of Andy Muschietti's IT. Not only is there an adaptation of Pet Sematary in development, there's also one for Castle Rock, Sleeping Beauties, Revival, and Firestarter.

Now, according to a new report by Variety, it looks like the reboot of the adaptation of Firestarter has finally found a new director, Fatih Akin.

For those who aren't familiar with the filmmaker, Akin is the same director who gave movie lovers In the Fade last year, a German drama movie which not only was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or in the main competition of the 2017 Cannes Film Festival but also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Now Akin is set to direct the reboot of the adaptation of Firestarter a science fiction novel that was nominated for Best Novel by the British Fantasy Award, Balrog Award, and Locus Poll Award. The novel focuses on the story of Andy McGee and his daughter Charlene "Charlie," a family on the run from a government agency called The Shop. Back when he was in college Andy joined a Shop experiment that allowed for the use of a drug that gave him and both his future wife, Victoria Tomlinson, minor telekinetic abilities. Though their powers were limited, their daughter Charlie developed powerful pyrokinetic abilities.

The story might sound a bit familiar to some because of Eleven's backstory in the Duffer Brother's Netflix, Stranger Things. Though the show isn't entirely based on a Stephen King novel, the show's creators took a lot of inspiration from King's novels and from elements of the 80s.

The Firestarter reboot doesn't have a release date just yet but we'll let everyone know as soon as we get word.
