I think we can all agree that the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Fantastic Four reboot is the franchise's most speculated project in recent memory. Since the film's confirmation in late 2020, the rumor mill couldn't stop spinning regarding its official cast.

Fast forward to 2023 and things are still looking quite uncertain. Just when you thought the film's cast is already set in stone, it turns out that two of the rumored frontrunners have been taken out of the equation in a shocking development.

This week, the Fantastic Four reboot's casting update took a surprising turn after reports began circulating online that Adam Driver and Margot Robbie are no longer in contention for the roles of Reed Richards and Sue Storm, with some sources claiming they're too expensive for the project.

If you've been following the latest updates surrounding the Phase Six project, multiple sources have previously reported that Driver and Robbie would be joined by Paul Mescal and Daveed Diggs. However, the potential lineup may have already crumbled before it even began.

Now, amid Driver's exit, insider MyTimeToShineHello teased fans on Twitter that Doctor Who star Matt Smith might have replaced the Star Wars actor. While she didn't exactly say that Smith is now in contention for the part, her emphasis on "WHO" was seen by many as a dead giveaway.

We'd like to assume that the latest casting development is a major pain in the you-know-where for the folks behind the project. However, the film isn't coming out until 2025 so of course, there's still time for Marvel Studios to go back to the drawing board and find actors who would fit the MCU's iteration of the First Family.

Now, for those who are hoping that casting announcements will be made soon, it's worth mentioning that Marvel Studios is reportedly skipping this year's San Diego Comic-Con so we might have to wait until at least the end of the year to finally get the confirmation.

Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four is currently scheduled for release in theaters on May 2, 2025.
