The final trailer of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald excited a lot of fans since it gave us a number of interesting moments between Newt, Grindelwald, Dumbledore, and so much more. However, it may have caused some controversy when Asian actress Claudia Kim was revealed to be the human form of Nagini before she became the pet and Horcrux of Harry Potter antagonist Voldemort.
Simply put, many think that the casting of Kim is a bit racist since the concept here is she's an Asian woman who is the pet of a white man. As fans can see, that is a huge problem. Harry Potter author and Fantastic Beasts writer JK Rowling released a statement regarding the alleged racism.
Ellen Oh, a writer of teen books, said that making Nagini an Asian woman prior to her becoming Voldemort's pet is pretty racist. Others have also chimed in, claiming that Rowling is putting in people of color for "woken points" without actually asking other Asians how they feel about this.
Rowling claims that the Naga are snake-like creatures that come from Indian mythology and that they have been depicted in a variety of ways. Fans have had a mixed response to this and it's not expected to get any prettier.
While most people still admire her writing skills, Rowling has been getting a lot of backlash over Fantastic Beasts lately. Aside from this controversy, there's also the fact that Johnny Depp was cast as Grindelwald. Many fans took umbrage with the fact that someone who had beat his wife would be allowed to join a franchise that has been anti-abuse for the longest time.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is going to hit theaters on November 16.
