Fantastic Beasts 2 Director Confirms That Dumbledore Is Still In The Closet In This Movie

Harry Potter fans might have spotted snippets of a young Dumbledore's (Jude Law) affection for Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) in various clips in the trailers for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, however according to Fantastic Beasts 2's director, David Yates, Dumbledore still hasn't come out as gay in the movie's timeline.

Speaking with Empire for its November 2018 release (via Express), the director confirmed that Dumbledore is actually still hiding in the closet in the timeline for The Crimes of Grindelwald. Though the future headmaster of Hogwart's sexuality wasn't explored as much in J.K. Rowling's books, the director promises to thread the topic further in future Fantastic Beasts installments.

"Dumbledore is not out as a gay man in this film," the director began. He then added, "This part of this huge narrative that Jo is creating doesn't focus on his sexuality, but we're not airbrushing or hiding it… The story [of the romantic relationship] isn't there in this particular movie but it's clear in what you see… that he is gay."

The director also pointed to a scene between Grindelwald and Dumbledore that fans might have noticed during the final trailer for the movie.

"A couple of scenes we shot are very sensual moments of him and the young Grindelwald," the filmmaker explained. "I think people just have to wait and see and appreciate that in movies to come to that relationship will be explored much more fully."

Dumbledore's sexuality seems pretty clear in the final trailer for Fantastic Beasts 2. We can't wait to see the character's personal journey as he continues his path in the movie and as he goes along in future Fantastic Beasts movies.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald releases November 16.
