Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was home to a huge changing of the guard in the billion-dollar franchise as Sam Wilson officially took over for Steve Rogers as Captain America. Of course, fans were beyond thrilled to finally see the former Falcon embrace his destiny as the new Star-Spangled Man with a Plan but they were most especially happy for Anthony Mackie who is finally getting his long-overdue MCU spotlight. In fact, Twitter's Captain America page even features the actor's version of Cap on its display picture, further establishing him as the franchise's next big hero.
However, it was apparently just temporary as Marvel shockingly removed Mackie's face on the official Captain America Twitter page and replaced him with Hayley Atwell who voices Peggy Carter aka Captain Carter in the upcoming animated What If...? series. Marvel didn't give out any explanation regarding the change but it was obviously done to promote the new show hitting Disney+ on Wednesday.
Naturally, fans were taken aback by the decision and most of them aren't having any of it. Taking to Twitter, MCU fans slammed the comic book giant for replacing Sam Wilson who was only featured on the Cap Twitter page for four months. Check out the reactions here:

I'm pretty sure it's going to be temporary and we'll see Mackie's face back on Captain America's official Twitter handle in no time. Meanwhile, this "controversial" move pretty much solidifies that Captain Carter will be a major player not only in the animated series but in the MCU as a whole as well. Rumor has it that there's a good possibility that Atwell could reprise the role in live-action so I guess there's some truth to the reports.
Meanwhile, all episodes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier are available for streaming on Disney+.
